SYNOPSIS
Students were challenged to find two spaces inside the Ohio Union at The Ohio State University. These spaces were to have objects or interactions that were made with intention. Through this process, we created gesture sketches focusing on each area and transformed these into complete diptychs on paper.

Initial Research/Sketches
I began by exploring the Ohio Union and observing how people used each space as well as evaluating how each space effected my emotions and senses. This was portrayed through quick gesture sketches.
Picking the Area
The two photos below were the two areas that I chose to evaluate. I will later explain why I chose each space compared to the other.
Process
Below are a few photos of my process. I initially chose to sketch each space on separate pieces of Bristol paper, but later chose to do both on one. This worked better for both the style of image and size constraints of the project.
Final Sketches and Evaluations
My two illustrations show the various yet similar environments of the Ohio Union, exemplifying some of the different atmospheres that one building can have even though they have similar features. Both of these areas have elements from the other that I found particularly interesting, specifically the variation of light values. My drawings were done with Prismacolor pencils and Prismacolor markers.

The left drawing is of a study room on the third floor of the Ohio Union. The octagonal room is rich of warm colors that encourage people who pass by to sit down and stay for a while. There are comfortable chairs and long benches with cushions that spur students to look out at High Street as they study or relax. The large windows on the walls and the octagonal window on the ceiling let in natural light, which is blue compared to the room’s paint and lighting fixtures.

The right drawing is of the Union’s main hall, seen from the second floor. This space has cool colors and metallic features that prompt people to continue through the room, as if they are not supposed to stay for long. Though it is a central space for traffic, people can sit on the metal benches if necessary. The light fixtures hanging from the ceiling give off warm light that contradicts the cool blues and greys of the structure and seating.
